Best place to walk around the city and check out places is on Rue St. Catherine - its sort of the main shopping drag in the city and has a lot of good restaurants, bars and shops.
The area around the docks/port is really nice - lots of restaurants/bars there as well.
McGill University is at the end of Rue St. Catherine and is a pretty campus (if you're into that kind of thing).
The big thing in Montreal is smoked meat. Sort of like bbq brisket, there are a bunch of places famous for it in Montreal and I'm sorry but I can't remember the specific names of any places.
There are a ton of great French bistros around the city - and you can brush up on your French since about 70-80% of the conversations you'll hear on the street will be in French.
Montreal is also known for its strip clubs. Not that I'd know anything about that.
Finally, the Casino de Montreal is pretty cool and has the highest rated restaurant in the city. If you feel like dropping $300 on a tasting menu over 4 hours, then check it out. I did and it was awesome.
